The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to get back on the winning side of the win-loss column and get to 4-1 with a win over the 2-2 Dallas Cowboys. In what will be the first of three primetime games in a four-week stretch for the Steelers, here is what they’ll need to do to defeat Dallas.
Heavy usage of outside runs
The Arthur Smith run scheme has always been focused on the usage of outside zone runs, and Week 5 will be the week to lean into that. The Cowboys have allowed the sixth-most rushing yards on runs off tackle and to the outside. On top of that, they will be without DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons – their best edge defenders. Run the hell out of the ball to the outside, and finally get a consistent run-game going.
Lean into the mobile aspect of Justin Fields
To continue harping on the run game, the Cowboys have allowed the fourth-most rushing yards by quarterbacks this season. The Steelers haven’t drawn up a ton of designed runs by Fields to this point, and he has done a good job with his arm. Get Fields involved in the run game, make Dallas load up the box, and then pick them apart with quick, efficient throws to march down the field.
Clean things up defensively
The Steelers were dreadful defensively against the Colts. Specifically, the Steelers were carved up on third down and over the middle of the field. Patrick Queen? Have a rebound game and show everyone that you were worth that contract. Joey Porter Jr? Lock down CeeDee Lamb to make up for Michael Pittman doing whatever he wanted. The defense needs to have a statement game against a viable offense with a good quarterback and great receiver.
