The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost their last two games, bringing them to 3-2 after a 3-0 start. Any time a team loses consecutive games, or goes on any sort of losing streak, a lot of fingers get pointed at the head coach – and right fully so. Danny Parkins of Fox Sports had words for Mike Tomlin, saying that he is overrated as a head coach.
“Here’s the thing about Mike Tomlin,” Parkins said. “He deserves a ton of respect for doing more with less. Never having a losing season is incredible. With Mike Tomlin you have a very high floor, you have a good culture. You have an eloquent impressive leader who commands a room. All of those things I would never take away from him. But I would also say he is the single-most overrated coach in the NFL. This guy is living off of a Super Bowl from 16 years ago with a quarterback that he didn’t bring in. In the postseason since that Super Bowl, he is 5-9. He is a defensive coach. In those nine playoff losses, his defense is giving up an average of 35 points per game. He has not solved the offensive side of the ball since Ben Roethlisberger [retired]. Four quarterbacks in less than four years since he had Ben Roethlisberger. Six different offensive coordinators since that [Super Bowl] win. This guy is a defensive coach, gives you a high floor, but he does not actually give you a chance in the modern NFL to win a Super Bowl.”
It’s hard to argue with any of these points.
