With the NFL trade deadline one week away, teams around the league, specifically the AFC, are in an arms race to get as much talent as possible. The Baltimore Ravens are the latest team to add a wide receiver, sending a fifth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for Diontae Johnson and a sixth-round pick.
The Steelers traded Johnson to the Panthers in March in exchange for Donte Jackson and a sixth-round pick. So in total, the Panthers have essentially traded Donte Jackson (who has three interceptions for the Steelers) and two sixth-round picks in exchange for eight weeks of Diontae Johnson and the Ravens’ fifth-round pick – not exactly a well-run organization in Carolina.
In terms of what this means for the Steelers, well, they’ll play their former receiver twice in the final nine weeks of the season, but now it puts even more pressure on them to go get a receiver of their own. The Bills, Chiefs, and Ravens have all made trades to get receivers while Pittsburgh still remains without one. Send a fourth-round pick to the Raiders for Jakobi Meyers. If the Panthers are having a fire sale, send one of your two seventh-round picks to Carolina for Adam Thielen – do something. Because you can’t have enough weapons in today’s NFL, especially if you’re an AFC playoff team. And with all due respect to Van Jefferson who did have a nice game against the Giants, he isn’t who you want as your starting No. 2. Go make a trade of your own to get another weapon on the offense, and strengthen your chances of winning games in January.
