The Steelers have yet to announce the move or the corresponding release to fit Agnew on the practice squad.
Agnew worked out for the Steelers back in early September. Here’s what we wrote about him then:
Drafted in the fifth round by the Detroit Lions in 2017, Agnew, then a defensive back, immediately established himself as a star return man, being named the first-team All-Pro punt returner his rookie season. The 5’10, 190-pound athlete ran a 4.34-second 40-yard dash prior to the draft.
Agnew transitioned to wide receiver entering the 2020 season for the Lions. He then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021, where he’s spent his last three NFL seasons. Agnew made his first Pro Bowl following the 2022 season as a return specialist.
In 2023, Agnew recorded 14 catches for 225 receiving yards and one touchdown. He added 14 punt returns for 144 yards (10.3 average, long: 48) and 15 kick returns for 391 yards (26.1 average, long: 53).
Over his career, Agnew has amassed four punt return touchdowns, two kick return touchdowns, 746 receiving yards, five receiving touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and 31 total tackles.
While there’s no word on his current status, Calvin Austin III was injured late on Sunday against the Commanders. The Agnew signing could be an insurance policy for the Steelers’ current punt returner.
