The Pittsburgh Steelers had no idea what they were in for at the quarterback position heading into the 2024 NFL season. The team moved on from QB Kenny Pickett in the offseason after bringing in veteran Russell Wilson. Pittsburgh subsequently traded a conditional pick for Justin Fields, and though they named Wilson the starter, things became fuzzy after he suffered a calf injury to kick off training camp.

It was aggravated just ahead of Week 1 and sidelined him through the first six weeks of the year. While Fields was solid in his relief, getting the team off to a 4-2 start, there’s no doubt that Wilson has provided a spark that even Fields couldn’t match. Now, it’s looking more and more like Wilson’s putting together a Pro Bowl season after a tumultuous two-year run with the Denver Broncos.

Wilson’s campaign with Pittsburgh hasn’t been flawless. Through seven starts, Wilson maintains the second-highest pressure-to-sack rate of his career at 25% — the sixth-highest rate in the league among quarterbacks with 100+ dropbacks this year. There are still times he’s failed to utilize the intermediate passing game over the middle of the field. However, statistically, this may be one of his most impressive seasons yet — even dating back to his year with the Seattle Seahawks.

The 9x Pro Bowler could make it a 10th if his season continues in this fashion. They’ve got a challenging five-game stint to close out the year (vs. Browns, @ Eagles, @ Ravens, vs. Chiefs, vs. Bengals), but if the offense continues to show this kind of prowess, he’ll have earned it.
