The Pittsburgh Steelers have named defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi as the team’s nominee to win this year’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, it was announced Thursday. The award is given each year recognizing a player for “excellence on and off the field,” and is named after Hall of Fame RB Walter Payton.

On his charitable efforts in his community, the Steelers shared:

Through his First of Many Foundation, which was inspired by his experience as a first-generation Nigerian American, Larry has given back to the Pittsburgh community and beyond ina. multitude of ways. His annual programs include a free youth football camp in his home state of North Carolina, a back to school event supporting Urban Academy, a Thanksgiving dinner that he hosts for the YWCA and a holiday shopping event he has sponsored for the past nine years, dating back to his time with the Cleveland Browns.

Each year, the winner of the award receives a $250,000 donation to the charity of his choice, while nominees receive up to $55,000 in donations to a charity of their choice.

Steelers DT Cam Heyward was last year’s recipient after his sixth nomination for the award. Among other Steelers to win the ward since its inception in 1969 (then dubbed the Gladiator Award before earning its current name in 1970) are Franco Harris (1976), Joe Greene (1979), Lynn Swann (1981) and Jerome Bettis (2001).

Starting QB Russell Wilson has also won Walter Payton Man of the Year, though it was back in 2020 with the Seattle Seahawks.
