The Pittsburgh Steelers are in desperate need of an upgraded corps of wide receivers. Last offseason, they signed the likes of Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, and Scotty Miller after trading Diontae Johnson. They later added Ben Skowronek and traded for Mike Williams in season, but nothing materialized from the latter outside of one touchdown grab against the Washington Commanders. And speaking of the Commanders, they have taken one of the Steelers’ potential wide receiver targets off the board.

The Commanders and San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms on a trade involving wide receiver Deebo Samuel. There is obvious connective tissue between the two organizations, as Commanders general manager Adam Peters came from San Francisco, spending several years in their front office. While the trade can’t become official until the new league year, Adam Schefter reports that the Commanders have agreed to send a fifth-round pick to San Francisco in return for Samuel.

The first 2025 off-season NFL trade: San Francisco has agreed to send standout wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick, sources tell ESPN.

Like any trade agreed to now, it cannot be processed until the new league year begins…

Samuel is coming off a down year. His 51 catches are his lowest since 2020 when he only played in seven games due to injury and his three receiving touchdowns are his lowest since his rookie year in 2019. He was an All-Pro selection in 2021.

Now, the Steelers’ selection of potential trade targets has dwindled down. While the likes of Cooper Kupp and Courtland Sutton are still options, they’ll need to be far more aggressive this offseason to ensure they have multiple options in the passing game.
