The NFL Draft is just three days away, and still, no major trades have taken place involving first-round picks. That will all but certainly change before the end of night one, and the Pittsburgh Steelers could be a team to watch in terms of trading up for a quarterback. ESPN’s Adam Schefter says that if Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders begins to slip, Pittsburgh could get active.
“Sources said the Steelers had not been planning to draft a quarterback in Round 1, but they also were not expecting Sanders to fall out of [the] top 10,” Schefter writes. “Now, all options seem to be on the table, and they are preparing in case they have the option to draft Sanders.”
Schefter adds that, considering the Steelers don’t have a second-round pick due to the DK Metcalf trade, they are more likely to trade down rather than trade up.
“There has been speculation about whether Pittsburgh would trade up to secure a quarterback, and remember, it already has traded its second-round pick to Seattle for wide receiver DK Metcalf, leaving the franchise short-handed heading into the draft’s early rounds,” Schefter writes. “This makes it more likely the Steelers will trade back in the draft, not up.”
The plan has always felt like Pittsburgh would make a move (or multiple moves) to get a quarterback in 2026. That still feels like the right way to go, but if Sanders does fall to Pittsburgh and they love him, they very well could scrap those plans and take the polarizing quarterback.
