The Pittsburgh Steelers have a definitive plan for 2025, which is to go as far as possible with Aaron Rodgers in what will likely be his final NFL season. The front office has made it clear, intentionally or not, that adding a veteran presence to this team was the goal of the offseason.

It is uncertain just how much better these moves will make the Steelers, especially for this upcoming season. According to former Steeler and ESPN NFL Analyst Ryan Clark, these moves put the Steelers in an awkward position for the near future.

Clark has been one of the more outspoken former Steelers players over the last several years. He has been willing to question the direction of the franchise, and when he joined Green Light with Chris Long, he did not hold back when asked about how the Steelers would emerge from quarterback purgatory.

“I think the team’s going to be good, like 10-win team,” Clark said. And guess what? Next year, you’re still looking for a quarterback. I said it on TV and people got mad at me. We need to be atrocious, they need to be awful. And so to me the only answer is with the picks you have, you have to sell the farm to get the guy.”

It is a challenging and interesting position the Steelers have found themselves in, and Clark is correct in the fact that the Steelers will have to make do with the current picks they have, as the team does not project to be near the bottom of the league this upcoming season. While it is almost impossible to project how the NFL season will unfold, certain prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft are already being tied to Pittsburgh.

ESPN’s Matt Miller released a 2026 NFL Mock Draft on June 30th. In his mock draft, the Steelers picked 16th, and Miller’s projected selection was quarterback LaNorris Sellers from South Carolina. Miller had high praise for the rising sophomore.

“Sellers is one of the nation’s most exciting prospects,” Miller wrote. “As he threw for 18 touchdowns to seven interceptions last season while rushing for 674 yards and seven scores. The 6-foot-3, 242-pounder is big, strong and mobile and could be picked way before this if he cleans up some decision-making mistakes. With two years of eligibility following next season, Sellers is no lock to be in the draft, but his potential excites evaluators.”

Whether or not the Steelers would have to “sell the farm” to get a quarterback like Sellers in the draft is yet to be seen. Regardless of whether or not Pittsburgh has to trade up, we can reasonably expect a quarterback to be selected on night one of the 2026 NFL Draft in downtown Pittsburgh as the Steelers try to find their way out of quarterback purgatory.
