A promising member of the Steelers secondary will be out for at least four weeks, with the Steelers announcing Tuesday that cornerback Cory Trice Jr. has been placed on injured reserve.
In the same announcement, the Steelers made the signings of cornerback James Pierre and offensive tackle Calvin Anderson official. They also swapped out practice squad players, signing linebacker Marcus Haynes to the practice squad and releasing tight end Matt Sokol.
There’s still an open spot on the practice squad following the signing of James Pierre.
Haynes spent some time with the Steelers this summer. Here’s what we wrote about him then:
Haynes signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2023. In his final year of college at Old Dominion, the 6’4, 240-pound defender recorded 47 total tackles and four sacks. He’s since spent time with the Houston Texans, San Antonio Brahmas of the UFL, and Cleveland Browns.
The loss of Trice, who suffered a hamstring injury in the Steelers’ Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, is a brutal blow to a team with remarkably thin depth at cornerback. Trice lost his rookie season to injury but was developing into an important rotational member of the Steelers secondary. He recorded a game-changing interception in the Steelers’ Week 2 victory over the Broncos.
Now, the Steelers’ cornerback room consists of Joey Porter Jr., Donte Jackson, Beanie Bishop Jr., Darius Rush, and Pierre. Pittsburgh faces the Indianapolis Colts next in a Week 4 matchup.
