The Pittsburgh Steelers are 7-2 and sit atop the AFC North heading into the biggest game against the Baltimore Ravens in quite sometime. Outside of their undefeated 11-0 start in 2020, this is the Steelers’ best record through nine games since 2017. And not only are the Steelers winning, their offense is one of the best in football.
Since Week 7 when Russell Wilson took over as the starter, the Steelers are averaging over 30 points per game and rank 10th in EPA per play. Passing wise, their offense is 8th in EPA per dropback in that span. To add onto that, Wilson has six big time throws, which is tied for fifth in the league, and has just one turnover worthy throw, which was an interception by Jeremy Chinn. Wilson’s average depth of target is also third in the league in that span, meaning that Wilson is consistently pushing the ball downfield and giving his receivers chances to make plays.
The Steelers’ offense is also tied for third in touchdowns per game in over their last three games. They’ve won games, but completely different from how they’ve done it in the past. Per ESPN, the Steelers were 0-9 when allowing 24+ points over the last two seasons. If the defense didn’t play lights out, they were doomed to a loss. However, they showed against Washington that this isn’t the same Steelers that we’ve unfortunately been subjected to over the last handful of years. The win over Washington also marked the Steelers’ first win without a field goal since Week 16 of the 2020 season when they beat the Indianapolis Colts 28-24.
Pittsburgh’s defense is still one of the best in the NFL, but they now have the offense capable of making them a top-tier team that can win playoff games rather than just squeak into the postseason.
