If the term “aging like a fine wine” was personified, it would wear 97 in black.
Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cam Heyward is in the midst of arguably the best year of his career. The 35 year-old is on pace for 10 sacks, which would be the second-most of his career. The 72 tackles he’s on pace for would be the third-most of his career.
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, head coach Mike Tomlin showed love and appreciation to his longest-tenured player and future Hall of Famer.
“Cam Heyward is playing lights out and he’s playing as good as he’s ever played,” Tomlin said. “I appreciate the fact that he’s Pittsburgh born and raised… he’s an ageless wonder.”
Many were quick to point out that Heyward was born in Georgia. However, Tomlin may have meant Pittsburgh born and raised could mean drafted by Pittsburgh and “born and raised” a Steeler through his entire career. Regardless, the Steelers’ defensive front has been one of the best in football this season in large part due to No. 97 aging in reverse.
