The Pittsburgh Steelers watched their top choice at quarterback choose the New York Jets over them because they were too cheap to give him the kind of deal he was worth. And whatever you think of Fields, the problem remains that the Steelers don’t have a starting quarterback on their roster, and their options are minimal.
If it was going to be Russell Wilson, that would have already happened – it feels like that ship has sailed. It feels like it’s Aaron Rodgers or bust at this point, which isn’t the news a lot of the fanbase would like to hear, but it’s the bed the Steelers made. Because of that, now is the time for darts to start getting thrown – trade for Joe Milton.
Fox NFL insider Jordan Schults reported that the Patriots have had discussions about trading Milton, and that seems all the more likely after they signed Josh Dobbs to a two-year deal worth $8 million. Milton is a raw player, but his mobility and massive arm are alluring, nevertheless. The Steelers have preached about wanting mobility in a quarterback, and their current cast of weapons would fit what Milton does best, which is chucking the ball deep. It also fits the Arthur Smith offense – run the ball, set up deep shots via play-action. In his one start last season in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills, Milton went 22-of-29 and had two total touchdowns (one passing, one rushing).
It’s a dart throw, but at this point, all the Steelers can do is throw darts and hope one sticks to the board. Would you rather pay Aaron Rodgers for a year or have a 25-year-old athletic quarterback with a big arm whose cap hit for 2025 is barely over $1 million? I know which one I’m picking. Trade one of your many Day Three picks to the Patriots, and see what happens.
