Steelers snap counts: How Pittsburgh rotated OLBs, WRs in Week 14

Welcome back to Steelers snap counts following a Week 14 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Steelers Week 14 snap count takeaways

Russell Wilson was back to playing 100% of the offensive snaps on Sunday; no Justin Fields in Week 14.
Your weekly Mike Williams snap count report: 27% of offensive plays. He was the Steelers’ WR5 in Week 15, behind the likes of Scotty Miller and Ben Skowronek in offensive playing time.
The Steelers like to ride the hot hand at running back, as they should. This week the top running back was Jaylen Warren, who played 52% of offensive snaps, ahead of Najee Harris (42%) and Cordarrelle Patterson (13%).

Calvin Austin III played just 35% of the offensive snaps despite George Pickens’ injury. There’s a chance he was still a little banged up from last week against the Bengals. Instead, Scotty Miller, a usual gameday inactive, operated as the Steelers’ de facto WR2, playing 55% of offensive snaps.
Minkah Fitzpatrick pops up in the offensive snap counts yet again as the Steelers’ victory formation safety.
Week 14 marked a massive boost in playing time for rookie slot cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr.: 80% of defensive snaps after playing just 11% last week. As a result, Cam Sutton’s snaps dropped from 72% last week to 17% against the Browns.

Following a Larry Ogunjobi injury, Isaiahh Loudermilk

played 51% of defensive snaps. Keeanu Benton also saw a boost, playing 71% after hovering in the 50% range for most of the year.
Week 14 was the first time this season that the Steelers have had T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, and Preston Smith all active on gameday. Here’s how the defensive snaps were divvied up: Watt (88%), Highsmith (57%), Herbig (43%), Smith (28%). It’s clear the Steelers want to see all four see significant playing time, although I’d expect Highsmith’s numbers to increase as he settles in more post-injury.
Damontae Kazee has been one of the least talked about Steelers this season, but he’s carved out a consistent role for himself on defense. This week he played 19% of defensive snaps.
This week’s inside linebacker rotation: Patrick Queen played his usual 100% of defensive snaps. Payton Wilson logged 48% while Elandon Roberts wasn’t far behind with 41%.
Something interesting I’ve only just now noticed this season: Unlike the rest of the Steelers’ tight end room, MyCole Pruitt doesn’t play any special teams. He did log over 30% of offensive snaps yet again in Week 14.
The Steelers’ offensive-to-defensive plays ratio this week: 62:69. It’s the first time in a while that they’ve played more defense than offense this season.

Making the most of it award

There are two very strong candidates this week in cornerback James Pierre and wide receiver Mike Williams. We’ll give the edge to the player who hasn’t won the award yet this season: James Pierre. He had an interception that nearly sealed the game despite playing just 23% of defensive snaps on Sunday.
