The iron men
As always, we’ll start by shouting out the players who played 100% of the snaps on one side of the ball. This week on offense, it’ll once again be starting quarterback Justin Fields and the healthy offensive linemen: Broderick Jones, Mason McCormick, Zach Frazier, and Dan Moore Jr. Spencer Anderson replaced an injured James Daniels early in the game and played 93% of the snaps, while George Pickens was the Steelers’ most-played skill position player with 87% of snaps played.
On defense, it’s the same 100% trio as always: cornerback Joey Porter Jr., safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and linebacker Patrick Queen. Cornerback Donte Jackson played the next closest, with 98% of the defensive snaps. T.J. Watt also played an impressive amount with 94%.
Biggest risers
On offense, there’s the obvious with McCormick and Anderson stepping into full-time starting roles with both James Daniels and Isaac Seumalo injured. Wide receiver George Pickens also saw a big increase for last week (74%) to this week (87%). Van Jefferson also saw more snaps than last week after hurting his eye against the Chargers. With a number of running back injuries, Najee Harris rose from 58% of offensive snaps against LA to 69% against the Colts. Sunday also served as the introduction of running back Aaron Shampklin, who debuted with 18% of the offensive snaps. Connor Heyward went from 15% to 25% of snaps as well.
Defensively, Nick Herbig was the obvious big riser due to the Alex Highsmith injury. Beanie Bishop Jr. saw another increase in snaps, from 53% last week to 69% against the Colts, likely a symptom of the Steelers’ injuries in the secondary. Another rookie, Payton Wilson, leapfrogged Elandon Roberts in the inside linebacker rotation for the first time this season, jumping from 42% of defensive snaps to 55%. DeMarvin Leal also benefited from the Steelers’ defensive injuries, going from 18% of snaps last week to 34% against Indianapolis. Defensive tackle Montravius Adams returned to higher snap counts, with 25% against the Colts after playing just 11% last week. Safety Terrell Edmunds also made his defensive debut, with 13% of the snaps.
Edmunds and Shampklin were also big additions on special teams (22% and 52% of snaps, respectively).
Biggest fallers
Wide receiver Scotty Miller dropped from 57% of snaps last week to 12% this week. Obviously, James Daniels and Cordarrelle Patterson saw drops as well following their injuries (Patterson was likely on his way to being a riser).
On defense, safety DeShon Elliott was a surprise faller, dropping from 96% of snaps last week to 84% this week. Keeanu Benton went from 58% to 42%. Linebacker Elandon Roberts dropped as well, from 47% last week to 33% this week.
Nick Herbig also saw a huge decrease in special teams snaps, going from 80% last week to just 26% this week. Not shocking given his uptick in defensive starting snaps.
Making the most of it award
Cordarrelle Patterson wins it this week. His snap counts were limited due to injury, but he made the most of his time on the field: six rushes for 42 yards and two catches for 19 yards. He was a difference-maker in the run game on Sunday.
Other insights
The Steelers’ offense to defense snap ratio was 68:64, last week it was 65:45.
