As the Steelers await training camp, rumors will continue to swirl when it comes to potential trade acquisitions. One hot rumor that was floated on social media over the last week revolved around the Steelers potentially trading for Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

The speculation began when the infamous X account known as Rickey posted that the Steelers had interest in adding one of Jaire Alexander or Ramsey.

Of course, this comes with a bit of a disclaimer and a grain of salt, as this account is run by an unknown person. However, it’s also the account that posted a hint that George Pickens would be traded that night before Pittsburgh sent him to Dallas.

Regardless, this has led to more speculation of what a trade for Ramsey would cost, and if it would be worth it for the Steelers to pursue the star receiver – and I’m here to tell you it’s a move they should make.

Why the Steelers should trade for Jalen Ramsey

The Steelers’ lack of depth in the secondary came back to haunt them down the stretch last season. Cory Trice was injured early in the season, and the nickel position was so inconsistent between Beanie Bishop and Cam Sutton. Donte Jackson’s play also fell off a cliff in the final month of the season. His PFF grade of 50 flat ranked 18th out of 222 qualifying cornerbacks in the NFL. Ramsey can, and has, played all over the defensive backfield. He can be a boundary corner if Darius Slay’s play falls off. The three-tie All-Pro could also slot in as the nickel starter right away, as he has more than enough experience in the slot. In 2021, he had 341 snaps in the slot, per PFF, and he totaled 185 snaps in the slot last season. You can never have enough stars, especially in the defensive backfield when you are in a conference filled with star quarterbacks.

What would a Jalen Ramsey trade look like?

Considering that Ramsey is 30 and will turn 31 during the season, on top of the fact that his 2025 cap hit is $16.6 million, a Day Three draft pick will be the absolute maximum the Dolphins could command for a Ramsey trade. A conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft that could become a fourth if the Steelers win a playoff game and Ramsey plays X amount of snaps would be a fair exchange for both sides.

With that said, it shouldn’t be the only move the Steelers make. They still need a real No. 2 receiver. So while getting Jalen Ramsey would make them better, it can’t be the only move they make before the season starts.
