Training camp is almost here, which means we’ll be able to talk about the actual roster battles instead of just speculating about them. But until then, there’s still some fun to be had with the latter.

Which wide receivers will make the Steelers’ 53-man roster?

To me, the only true locks at wide receiver on the Steelers’ roster are D.K. Metcalf and Calvin Austin III. Both are proven offensive weapons (obviously, to varying degrees) and there’s no doubt they’ll be key contributors in the upcoming season.

The next tier is the probably-locks. I’d put Roman Wilson there due to his draft pedigree, as it’s hard to envision a world where the Steelers cut a third-rounder in his second year. I just can’t call him a lock yet as we’ve never seen him catch a pass in the Steelers uniform.

The other probably-lock is Ben Skowronek. This one might seem like a stretch, but the Steelers signed him to a two-year deal this offseason, signaling long-term plans. Skowronek is a core special teamer — an essential skill for a depth receiver — and a big-bodied pass-catcher in a room full of smaller, quicker position players.

You just know Arthur Smith is a big fan of his occasional fullback snaps, too.

To circle back to the “Let’s talk Steelers” discussing which tight ends make the roster, I see the Steelers keeping four — keep in mind that Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith will be major cogs in the passing game. That leaves an expected five spots for wide receivers, which is also what happened in 2024.

If so, who fills that final spot?

My guess is Robert Woods. He’s the prototypical Arthur Smith Z receiver: a possession wide receiver who’s a willing blocker. Woods can also provide a valuable veteran presence to the room, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he sees more snaps than expected in the upcoming season.

The names left out? Montana Lemonious-Craig, Brandon Johnson, Scotty Miller, Lance McCutcheon, Roc Taylor, and Ke’Shawn Williams. I’d expect the latter two, both promising undrafted free agents, to make the practice squad and be candidates for game day elevations.
